The Pebble bay co. story

Our story, just like many others, first started with a humble kitchen reorganisation caused by the effects of the pandemic and lockdowns here in Melbourne, Australia.

The increased time at home meant there was more time spent trying our hand at different cuisines and styles of cooking, and we came to the very quick understanding that our herb and spice collection was in dire need of attention. 

We realised that most of the herb and spice products on sale in the major supermarkets were not uniformly designed: some jars are square, some are round, and some come in sizes several times times larger than others . This jumble of jars made it difficult to organise neatly in our modest apartment pantry, and was causing crowding. This crowding meant that when searching for specific herbs or spices - especially those infrequently used ones right at the back! -  we needed to shift each jar or bottle to see if the right one was behind it.  And due to a distinct lack of labelling other than on the front face of the jars, this meant that we had to look at each label to confirm what the contents were.

But worst of all, all of our supermarket bought herbs and spices were unfortunately designed to be consumed as single-use disposables. Although there are occasionally glass jars available on the shelves, a disappointing number of herbs and spices still come packaged in plastic jars, with plastic lids, sealed with plastic tamper seals, and are almost always unable to be refilled due to their small size. 

In other words, they are, by design, destined for landfill.

We saw this issue and knew there was a very real opportunity for change, and so we started Pebble Bay Co. right from our very own kitchen. Our goal from the start has always been to change the way we think about kitchen and pantry organisation, with the core concept always being around sustainability and the ability to reuse.  We wanted our products to not only be environmentally conscious in their design, but also a fabulous addition to any pantry or kitchen benchtop.

And this is is how we came to land on our minimalist square glass jar design with wooden lids!

These beautiful jars are made from durable, heat-resistant, non-toxic borosilicate glass meaning they are made to last, and can be refilled over and over. Their larger 4oz / 120ml volume means that they can hold herb and spice refills without issue. 

Our luxurious range of lids, each professionally turned and sanded to a perfectly smooth finish, are designed in a way that perfectly lines up with the threading on the mouth of the jar, avoiding the need for any plastic lining or plastic threading.

That means that each Pebble Bay Co. herb and spice jar is proudly 100% plastic free!

And we didn't stop just there!

We saw that our sustainability efforts could be extended to our packaging, so all of our Pebble Bay Co. branded boxes and packaging are completely paper and cardboard based, with extremely minimal use of ink and printing.  We think they are special enough to be used as gift boxes too if you are giving the gift of Pebble Bay Co.!
